Whether exploring Mexico City or relaxing on the beaches of Cancun, Tulum, Cabo and other favorite hot spots, you’ll be able to enjoy flower, concentrates, vape pens, edibles and more – all of excellent quality – with a little planning and preparation. Read on to pick up some insights to enjoy marijuana safely and discreetly in Mexico.

DON’T BRING YOUR OWN!

First, we advise you to wait until arriving in Mexico to find your good friend Mary Jane (Marihuana en espanol), as travelling with marijuana isn’t worth the risks involved and finding a source within Mexico is fairly simple, with online and physical dispensaries popping up across the country.

You might think you can trick border patrol, but you cannot trick the police dogs that patrol all entry points. Play it safe, keep your stash at home and travel worry-free.

IS IT EVEN LEGAL?

What is the legal status of marijuana in Mexico? Can you buy weed? Can you carry it? Short answer: it’s complicated. While marijuana has been legalized federally, state and municipal laws (and law enforcement) follow their own rules. Do not risk getting caught – be discreet, don’t smoke in public and use your best judgement. However, if you are caught, it’s best to have under 5 grams on your person and be ready to pay whatever fine they offer up to stay out of jail.

Is Marijuana Legal in Mexico? Know the laws before you go.

The Supreme Court of Mexico legalized cannabis in 2017 for medical use, and thanks to continued pressure from an educated and demanding public, restrictions to consuming and carrying cannabis have been greatly reduced. The current laws allow for the sale of cannabis products with under 3% THC to be sold in pharmacies (CBD oils and edibles) once they have government approval (COFEPRIS) which will be clearly marked on the label. However – these are the only products containing cannabis which can legally be sold in Mexico. Most marijuana and cannabis products officially fall into the illegal-to-sell category because there is no legal or political structure in place to support public sale.

HHC, DELTA 8 AND OTHER DERIVATIVES

COFEPRIS recently changed their application process, allowing foreign companies to fast track legal, government-approved cannabis products made from hemp into the Mexico market. Many online shops and physical stores in Mexico have started to sell vapes and edibles featuring HHC, Delta 8 and so on, offering some recreational cannabis alternatives.

PLAN AHEAD

If you know where you are going and how long you’ll be staying, you can plan ahead with an online company to deliver to your hotel discreetly and conveniently. Do some google searches for marihuana in your area and see what comes up. Depending on your destination, finding quality flower and pens on the streets of Mexico can be a challenge for the visitor. Online searches, Facebook and Instagram pages, reddit posts usually bring back enough information for the die-hard THC enthusiast to meet up with some kush.

WHAT TO BUY?

Street weed is cheap and abundant and throughout the country, young dealers with backpacks and black caps will set you on your way. Premium marijuana is called Kush down here and is much more expensive, but definitely worth the price to enjoy a nice smoke and an unforgettable sunset or day by the pool. Vapes are better sourced online from a reliable store and shipped to your location. Street vapes are usually clever imitations of US brands, but filled with cheap distillate of questionable strength and origin. Ask for the lab reports and make sure to get the real deal.

Edibles are readily available – you’ll be able to find marijuana products from brownies to mezcal and more made locally.

DON’T BE SHY – ASK AROUND

Mexicanos love their marijuana – after all, many best selling strains in the north have Mexican origins, and Mexicans are enthusiastic consumers. Use your best judgement when asking around, but taxi drivers, delivery drivers, waiters/hotel staff, and for some reason barbershops can find you a plug within minutes. Some smoke shops are proactive (like in San Cristobal? Bless their hearts) and in CDMX, you’ll even find stores and cafes that sell from a menu. Almost every city and town has a local dealer with an a la carte menu and delivery service. Be cool, be friendly, and share the love when someone helps you out.
